Travel is remarkable.

This is not so much a blog post, as it is permanent Nikko pen scribble all over my girlfriends faces when they are passed out, which they will only see when they drag themselves out of bed in desperation for poached eggs. They will stumble in front of the mirror, and see on their foreheads, in perfect script (of course) – “do not let Jean ever, ever, forget that travel is quite good actually”.

And by quite good, I obviously mean – important. And stimulating. And incredibly in-perspective-putting. If such a phrase were to exist. Doubtful.

I just got back from Japan.

A holiday which parts of me were dreading. (Elbow and left pinky). Because I really wanted the money for more lipsticks and a new watch. And maybe even a cheap American Nails pedicure every Saturday morning until I am 43. Selfish. Stubborn. And small-minded.

But once I was in Osaka breathing new air and being all busy with a map in my hand and wearing my silly tourist Kathmandu boots which looked worse than my mum on a school excursion, I was all into it.

Instantly. Deeply into it. Like some sort of religious convert.

So for all of those friends reading this, and also inquisitive strangers who were searching for their local optometrist but instead stumbled upon the most irrelevant blog in the southern hemisphere, I expect you to remind me of this very fact hourly. That travel is exceptional. That I learn a little more about myself and about the world each time I flirt with it.

And that I need not buy any more lipsticks, because they are overpriced and disappear as soon as I take a sip of water from a cup.

And once you have opened your mind to a new culture and have seen the largeness of the planet you get to say profound statements like “It doesn’t matter if my car and house were destroyed by a flood, I now know what is really important”.

And if you read it 118 times with your eyes squinted and head tilted to the left, you may start to believe the bullshit dribble that you actually write. Well, would you look at that. The girl can spin it!

  1. Totally understand - Japan is the best. Buy and Hello Kitty merch whilst over there?

  2. ...so does this mean we're not going to be Cartier watch twins?

You need to get your priorities sorted Jean. Otherwise I don't think we can be friends.

(Just kidding!!!) So glad you had an awesome time in Japan (...just like I said you would ;-)). Can't wait to hear more about it x
